Cable Modems to Managed WiFi+ | Apartment Building Internet in Las Vegas

The Problem:

The technology used by Cox Cable at the property was modem(s) over coax with typical speeds of 100-200 Mbps downstream x 30 Mbps upstream. Residents were dissatisfied with the service quality.

The property was also plagued with sloppy wiring and failing molding on all buildings, which represented poor aesthetics and safety issues. Most of the cable and molding was 15-20 years old.

The owners of Studio 629 wanted to differentiate their properties from competitors by offering a high-speed managed WiFi bulk service to all tenants and generate additional income as part of a sizable investment in a new network and technology.

DojoNetworks’ Solution: Redesign the Internal Network and Implement Dojo’s Unique ManagedWiFi+® Service

DojoNetworks implemented a redesigned internal network with an access point (AP) for each unit and every common area. Each AP provides wireless (WiFi) and wired connection options and delivers up to symmetrical Gbps in every apartment unit.

The Dojo solution included a full rewire of all units and fiber to each building and each telco closet. Dojo then ran a new Cat 6a wire to each unit and common area. In the individual units, Dojo installed a wall mounted Ruckus H550 Access Point. The Ruckus H550 has four ethernet ports on the bottom so each unit offers wireless and wired connections.

The Dojo solution included backup power in all telecom (MDF/IDF) closets to make sure the internet works even during power outages or interruptions. Dojo also installed a cellular console server at each building to ensure redundant access to the main equipment for remote support.

Rewiring of each building began in October 2023, and the new network was completed and turned up on February 1, 2024. The entire project was completed in just four months, including delivery of the new fiber circuit to the property and the complete redesign and installation of the new network.

Tenant satisfaction with the exclusive ManagedWIFI+ service is extremely high. Studio 629 can now promote their new high-speed internet service in Las Vegas as a differentiator and a lower-cost alternative to Cox at up to 50% savings.

The Results:

During the implementation phase of the project, Dojo held monthly update and project calls to keep communications at a high level. During the actual service turn up, Dojo hosted daily calls to coordinate access and updates on work completed.

Elemento™, our industry leading single-pane-of-glass support system and dashboard, was integrated with Studio 629’s property management software (PMS), Entrada. New residents receive their credentials for internet access 10 days prior to move-in via email and then again receive a text 24 hours prior to their lease start.

Trouble call rates for the units have been very low, with a projected repair rate of less than 0.5% per year, an industry low for trouble call rates. The DojoNetworks Support Center team answers calls for support 24x7 365 days a year. On average, each support request call is answered by a live person in less than 30 seconds, and average solution time for issues is less than 10 minutes.

The property owner estimates that the ManagedWiFi+ service will generate positive cash flow of more than $240,000 over the next five years. Additionally, the owner now owns the network that Dojo installed and can deploy other “smart” technologies—security systems, water sensors, cameras, etc.— to protect their asset.

DojoNetwork’s expert team supports and manages the internet backbone, the network, and all equipment, in addition to providing service support for the property and each resident.
