You have two options when it comes to selecting a WiFi router for your apartment.
Rent a managed router from us or Bring your own.
We describe the benefits of each below.
Rent a managed router from us
We provide rented routers. With these routers we will support your WiFi network in your apartment including the connectivity from all of your devices in your network. With these routers we are able to manage and support your network because we have software that ties into the routers and allows us to see and diagnose any issues that might be happening such as interference, low signal strength, speed issues etc. Please see our Managed Router page for more details. If the router fails, as long at it is not from abuse (water/physical damage/power surge) we will replace it for no charge. If you order a rented router prior to your installation, we will install it for you. If you order it after your Internet installation we will drop ship ($10) it to your apartment, or you can pick it up at our offices during regular business hours Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm or move in weekend Saturday or Sunday (9am until 6pm).
Bring your own
You can bring one from home, purchase one from BestBuy or Amazon. You are responsible for supporting your router and the devices behind it. We support up to the Ethernet port on the wall and if service works to your Ethernet support that is as far as we go. We can provide some very basic assistance with the settings, but when it comes to WiFi connectivity or settings on your router you will have to work with your router manufacturer. We highly recommend you use a current router.
Current routers are 802.11AC (WiFi 5) or 802.11AX (WiFi 6), anything older than that will not work well.
Technology changes rapidly, a router from two years ago will not keep up with the latest important features. Today, with interference, 2.4Ghz routers can be almost unusable in heavily populated buildings. We recommend an 802.11ac dual-band router at a minimum or 802.11ax as a better option. There are many models available. You CANNOT use any type of cable modem router combo routers or DSL/modem router combo WiFi routers, they are NOT compatible with our network. You need a standard Ethernet router. Also make sure you are not using an N150/N300/N600/N900 Router as they cannot handle the noisy wireless environment in apartment buildings.
If you contact support and are using a Combo Router or N based router we will not provide any support or assistance as these routers are not sufficient to use on our service.
If you have a data plan over 100mbps, make sure your router has an uplink port that supports 1000mbps, many cheaper routers only support up to 100mbps.
One final note, make sure that you never name your 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz SSID or wireless names the same thing. You will want to name them separately such as Apt504-2g, Apt504-5g, and then you will always want to connect to the 5g signal for the best performance.
Managed WiFi Buildings?
If you live in a building that has property managed WiFi, not only do you not need a router, routers are not allowed and will be blocked. Certain buildings have managed WiFi networks installed, to find out if you are living in a building with managed WiFi, please click here to see a list of properties that have managed WiFi installed.
